An opportunity to handle original prints, drawings and photographs from the V&A Parasol Foundation Women in Photography
The V&A Parasol Foundation Women in Photography Project keeps on getting better. It now has its own Collection Selection Box; a unique opportunity to handle original prints, drawings and photographs from the V&A collection. The Collection Selection Boxes contain carefully curated material to introduce a particular period, style, material or technique. Fiona Rogers, the first curator of our project offers an overview of photographs by women from the early pioneers of the 19th century such as Julia Margaret Cameron through to modernists, surrealists and photojournalists. Photography as a medium has come a long way from when women pioneers took it up as it was seen as an acceptable ‘craft’ for women alongside collaging.
Works by women photographers make up around 15% of the V&A’s photography collection. Our partnership helps shine a light on existing works and aims to rebalance the collection through acquisitions of important contemporary pieces by women artists for future visitors to enjoy.
The Collection Selection Box resources are available to members of the public to access for free in the V&A Prints and Drawings Study Room either for individual study or group teaching. You can also view and download the resource in a pdf format from the website if you are unable to visit the museum. A visual treat you can tuck into anytime.
