Advanced Leadership Foundation - Emerging leaders And shadowing program

This year, three outstanding Gibraltarian STEM students, who have recently completed their master’s degrees are spending the autumn in Washington DC on the fully funded intensive emerging leaders and shadowing program run by Advanced Leadership Foundation. As well as being immersed in the business world and visiting international institutions such as the World Bank they are also learning about the power of networking and how to hone their presentation skills. Each woman has been paired with an expert mentor to fuel their ambitions for the next step in their careers where they will be able to put into practice all their new skills.
Joelle Harrison, who studied at Cambridge for an Mphil in biological sciences aspires to be a patent lawyer so she can combine her strong scientific background with legal expertise to support innovation and protect intellectual property rights. During her BSc biological sciences degree at Durham she had her first taste of what skills are required. She proposed a novel method for breaking down waste plastic using GM microalgae. She learned how to draft two novel patent applications and oversaw the process towards securing a trademark for her innovation.
Dana Delgado Barreiro completed her master’s in cyber security and forensic information technology at the University of Portsmouth after obtaining her BSc in criminology and forensic studies at the same institution. Dana is fascinated by this fast-moving complex field and is determined to drive further innovation in the field.
Anne Isabella Canepa studied for her MSc in environmental science and climate change at the University of Gibraltar after her first degree in geography from Leeds University. She spent her summer monitoring the local ecology by observing the movements of the birds and their use of her strategically placed bird boxes around the centre of Gibraltar. Anne has an offer to stay in Gibraltar and work in insurance services and is exploring her future options with her mentor.
When the women return The Parasol Team will be pleased to host them at their offices and will follow their careers with interest. Knowing that they have helped shape the next generation of leaders who are ready to embrace change and bring fresh thinking to our rapidly changing complex world.
